The unusual name of this animal comes from the Aztec language and means “water monster”, it is also called water or aquarium dragon. The axolotl is the larva of some species of caudal amphibians, the ambystome, which can live its entire life and have offspring without ever turning into an adult amphibian. But the axolotl’s main mystery is its incredible ability to regenerate: it can regrow not only a lost tail or leg, but almost any organ, even a spine, part of a heart or a brain.
